How it Works

The solar-powered lighting systems work on the principle of photovoltaic (PV) technology to use sunlight to generate electricity through solar panels.

The solar cells or the PV cells in the panels – mounted on a lamp post or connected in a pole - absorb sun’s energy to convert it to DC electricity.

These solar panels have rechargeable battery to store converted electricity. This stored energy is used to power the LED lamp during the night hours. The provision for battery storage can provide sufficient power for upto 10 hours daily The batter provides a minimum of 5 days backup.

Through a light source, the solar panels take into account weather conditions like sensing outdoor light and giving off light automatically.

The system comes up with the automatic turn ON/OFF time for the dusk-to-dawn operations.

Solar street light system comes with a sensor to measure the surrounding light. During the day, when the light is sufficient to match a pre-specified point the solar light turns off and begins charging automatically. If the light in the surroundings goes lower than the point, the solar street light turns on by its own.


Even during the overcast skies or cloudy days, the solar panels continue to charge the batteries from the ambient light in the environment. The solar lighting system is designed to work in a way that the energy is stored and can be used for at least three days without sun.


Pole requirement for solar lights differs from the grid-connected pole. For solar street lights, a pole with Effective Protected Area (EPA) between 4 to 20 square feet is required.
